Refer to a range of examples in your answer to show how these skills have developed over time. Within the past two years of my media course I have had to analyse different products in order to gain different ideas of the conventions of pre existing media products, the being for AS researching thriller film openings in order to have a good grasp on their conventions in order to make my own thriller opening as professional as possible. For my A" product I had to once again analyse the different conventions from pre existing media texts although this time from rock music videos due to my music video being the second media product I created. With the jump from AS to A2 I had to look more closely at the codes and conventions and make sure that I realized the difference between thriller conventions and music video conventions. For my AS product I created a thriller film opening, here I needed to analyse the different conventions of real media texts in order to help me improve my own opening and at the same time I was able to take different key ideas from the films in order to make my movie more exciting to watch and thus more entertaining for the audience so that they will keep watching and not lose interest. The films that were most useful to my production in terms of analyzing their conventions to add into my own product were films such as Indiana Jones, seven, shutter island and silence of the lambs. each with its own personal characteristic which made the movies both successive and enjoyable to watch, as such with analysis I decided to take various parts of the films and add them into my own opening with a slight change on each. With Indiana Jones we decided to focus the film around an object or artifact. We thought that with typical thriller films the codes and conventions usually have them revolve around either a specific object or person and with this we decided to use the object as a source of the plot with the characters revolving around the object rather then around each other. This analysis of the film allowed use to be more creative with the overall plot of the opening and allowed us to make it more mysterious and enigmatic for the audience. With silence of the lambs we went into more detail of the iconic interrogation scene, this was due to our research showing that the scene went well with the audience and was known to be an iconic part of the film which would be long lived. We were creative when using the idea of a interrogation scene as we decided to have the current events more mysterious as with classic thrillers however we also we wanted to make ours seem more enigmatic to the audience and so we decided to alter the classic scene to make it more of a dark room with the interrogators face covered and the shot being scene from the interviewee, this way making it seem more confusing for the audience and making them want to watch on. With shutter island most of the film constantly adds mystery to the plot and makes the audience watch on, with this in mind and shutter islands dark setting and use of editing at key moments we decided to make the text scenes be added in with smoke to add the enigmatic effect which is the key conventions of thriller films this idea was also backed up with our analysis of the film seven with how the opening depicts different images coinciding with the texts in order to make it seem more mysterious just as we did with the smoke effects alongside the text. Within my product for AS I feel that I researched throughly into the different conventions of thrilller openings and I have continued this onto my A2 work by making thorough research for my rock music video. Reasearching the conventions of different music videos differed from thriller openigns grealy in as well as researching the types of videos used to portray the lyrics of the song I had to also look at the different conventions of rock music videos in terms of different camera shots to best represent the theme of the song and at the same time flow well with the actual song used itself. For my analysis of rock music videos I looked into different rock bands with them being both recent and older bands in order to see the main appeal behind different music videos, for this I analysed different videos from bands such as 30 seconds to mars, fallout boy bon jovi and of course sum41. To research the different codes and conventions of these bands I took most influence from their music videos and also their official band websites as these would allow me to see the different themes that come about within different rock bands and how they are portrayed in real life. With analysis for different shot types I focused on fast moving music videos such as the kill from 30 seconds to mars and american idiot and Jesus of suburbia from the band green day. analyzing the different shot types helped me see the conventions of fast pace media music videos and this would play key as my idea for our group video would focus on the character running around and so would include many different fast pace shot types. The main video used however for inspiration was bon jovis 'its my life'. With its fast cut shots and use of running towards a goal I felt it linked in well with the lyrics of the video and at the same time gave me an excelent idea that conforms to similar rock videos for example blink 182's video 'whats my name again?' where as with the bon jovi song the band members were also running around the town in order to get to a destination and make it entertaining for the audiance to watch. Over the past two years I feel that my analysis of conventions of different products has imprived and as such I can now analyse pre existing products in more detail and relate them more in depth into my own products. Analyse a chosen product you've created against audience theories. the product that I feel more related to audience theory would be my thriller opening, within it I am able to relate it to such theory's as audience gratification theory, reception theory, magic bullet theory and so on. I feel that my product relates to the magic bullet theory by how it is the theory that people receive information without any realization and as such within my thriller film opening it could be said that with the use of the artifact and symbols on the interrogation desk the audience would clearly know that the film is going to somehow revolve around the artifact without being directly told that it would. Another example of this occurring within my opening would be how the audience clearly knows that the main character has amnesia and is unclear about his past. this is clear before the character explains he has no previous memory. My product also relates to the audience gratification theory by how it offers the audience a chance of escapism and through this they are able to escape into a supernatural thriller which seems more interesting and exciting then the real world thus gratifying their need to escape from everyday problems and routine. Another audience gratification theory that my thriller film opening relates to would be two step flow theory and how with the argument that information in the media is received by firstly simple individuals who pay close attention to the mass media and its messages and then having the second step being the opinion leaders passing on their own interpretation in addition to actual media content. This can be incorporated within my film opening by how during individual thoughts being given by viewers the opinions varied but were slightly similar however with group feedback it seems the dominant members opinions were constructed and then copied as the opposition leaders passed on their own ideas. Overall I feel that my created media product works well with some key audience theory's and with this it shows how we have implemented the theories to make the thriller film opening more appealing to the target audience.

explain how far understanding of the conventions of exsisting media texts influenced the way you created your own media product and refer to a range of exmaples to show how these skills have developed over time

explain how far understanding of the conventions of exsisting media texts influenced the way you created your own media product and refer to a range of exmaples to show how these skills have developed over time: Within the two years working on my media course I have created two different media products, these being a thriller film opening in AS and for A2 I created a rock music video. For my AS production I had to research the different codes and conventions of thriller films in order to make ours more realistic and captivating for the audience. For this I was used the website you tube a lot in order to research different thriller film openings in order to look at the different codes and conventions used within different thriller films. For examples of thriller films I looked into the openings of well received famous thriller films in order to use techniques that have been received well by previous audiences. For the films I decided to use Indiana Jones, silence of the lambs, seven and shutter island. For each of the films we decided to take key different bits of the films that made them to be iconic thrillers and implement them into our opening in our own way. With Indiana Jones we decided to focus the film around an object or artifact. We thought that with typical thriller films the codes and conventions usually have them revolve around either a specific object or person and we thought that with a strange unknown artifact being the center of attention within the film it would make the audience more curious about the film and what will happen regarding the artifact. With the film silence of the lambs we took the iconic scenes of Clarice talking to Hannibal lector through interrogation. As such for our opening we decided to have the current events being a interrogation scene however with darker more mysterious thrillers we wanted to make ours seem more enigmatic to the audience and so we decided to alter the classic scene to make it more of a dark room with the interrogators face covered and the shot being scene from the interviewee, this way making it seem more confusing for the audience and making them want to watch on. With the film seven we decided to use the iconic opening of different clips and symbols to be added onto the artifact and being presented within the interrogation, this way it would add to the mystery surrounding the thriller opening with how their typical codes and conventions give subtle hints to plot devices mentioned earlier on in the film to once again be used later within the main scenes. (Here this being how the opening scenes of seven seem to depict the planning and grotesqueness nature of the serial killer within the film). With shutter island most of the film constantly adds mystery to the plot and makes the audience watch on, with this in mind and shutter islands dark setting and use of editing at key moments we decided to make the text scenes be added in with smoke to add the enigmatic effect which is the key conventions of thriller films. Within my product for AS I feel that I researched throughly into the different codes and conventions of thrilller openings and I have continued this onto my A2 work by making thorough research for my rock music video. Reasearching the codes and conventions of different music videos differed from thriller openigns grealy in as well as researching the types of videos used to portray the lyrics of a song I had to also look at the different codes and conventions of rock music videos in terms of different camera shots to best represent the theme of the song and at the same time flow well with the acctual song used itself. For my A2 research I once again used the website youtube as my primary source of infomation for analysing pre exisisting products of music videos. For my research I used rock bands such as fallout boy, 30 seconds to mars, sum 41 (to gain inspiration from their other videos) and this allowed us to see the specific codes and conventions used within music videos of the same genre, for example the fast cut action shots and the use of different lighting effects in order to portray the band as more 'rock-ish'. The main progression between my AS and A2 products would be as already stated before the different shot types that was used to make the song seem more fast paced. this was key as it meant that I would have to look in much finer detail as to exsisting procuts to see when the shots change in time with the music for example fallout boys 'this aint a scene its an arms race' where the pace suddenly picks up and at the same time the video shots change from a close up of the singers face to a wide shot of the entier band playing while the camera movements are quickend. The main product I used to gain inspiration for my music video was bon jovis 'its my life'. Over the last two years I feel that through research it has helped me understand the specific codes and conventions needed within both thriller films and rock music videos and by understanding the codes and conventions it helped me improve the overall quality of my products and also made them seem more offical and and enjoyable for the audiance to view. *please note* "I am not sure why I am unable to paragraph my essay as while typing it up I was paragraphing it into different sections, unfortunately when previewing my work it has left no individual paragraphs however I am informing you that this is not intended and I think it is due to bloggers new formatting style and is not of my own accord."

Looking at two types of Media, describe the ways in which a particular group of people are collectively represented or provided for, using specific examples to support your response.

We become bombarded with messages and become a subject rather than an individual as soon as we engage them, they control us.
From this it could be said that the mass media use messages to influence peoples thoughts and opinions to portray people in a specific way. this could be done though both video and text.

in relation to text youth are portayed by the mass media most commonly in the form of newspapers and reports on youth activity. unfortunatly due to the negative steriotype cast around youth created by the negative posts about youth this has seemingly affected the general population to come under the opinion that as a collective group youths are seen as rude, voilent yobs with little respect for themselves or others.
an example of the mass emdia using the textial infomatio(both through newspapers and broadsheets)would be during the london riots in 2011 where youths were instantly given a negative portayal and seemingly being branded as the main cause of the chaos. this was done mainly throught headlines instantly accusing youth of the acts commited.
an example of this being the sun printing on the 7th august 2011 staing the date after reeves corner was burnt down "welcome to the youth of today". this title herby instantly accusing youth of the terriible acts that befell london during the riots. This however was not the case as it has now been confirmed that george thompson was responsible for the fire on reemes corner and he was a 34 year old man (clearly not a youth). this proving that it was the medias aim to attract attention to make youth be the target for blame during the london riots.
another factor in the negative portrayal of youth during the riots was the organization and wide spread way information was exchanged due to phone applications and most noticeably blackberry messenger and twitter. with the excuse that youths are the ones primarily using the applications it was theorized that the reason the riots were so terrible in comparison to the Brixton riots was the use of information spread and thus the actions of youth.

this seemingly allowing the media to encode their own messages and ideas to the general public in order to group youth as a whole negative stereotype is backed up by Stuart halls theory that the media are not the ones that voice information but instead they are the ones who create information in the image they see fit.

Appart form newspapers, video and film releases have also grouped youth together in a negative light to portray them as negative stereotypes, this being shown through both kidulthood and adulthood portraying the current state and representation of youth during the times they were filmed and made to be that of a negative stereotype with the main concerns of youths seen as sex, drugs and gang violence. this instantly branding youth as bad and rebellious people the entire way throughout the films and is also backed up with the film shank set in the near future where in a semi-apocalyptic London in the year 2015 youth violence has increased further to senseless killings been seen and shrugged off as nothing theorizing that the negative view of youth will continue and not lessen anytime soon.
these films allow a viewer to make a general observation of youth as a collective in a negative manor and due to the theory of moral panic they believe that the negative events of the films are somehow more likely to happen to them and thus tend to shun the general youth on a whole and in a sense out-casting them which in turn is making them into a greater disliked social group then before.

In conclusion it seems that youth are seemingly branded as a overall negative group through the use of the mass media and with previous views of youth seemingly becoming negative examples from web 2.0, tabloids and films have followed suit in agreeing to the message created by the general media that youths are dangerous, violent yobs who do not have a care for people or their society even thought that is only a small number of youth and the media is seemingly only producing reports on cases they feel can add to their seemingly protest against the general youth within the country.

Describe how you developed your skills in the use of digital technology for media production and evaluate how these skills contributed to your creative decision making.

Over the past 2 years in my media studies I have created a thriller film opening in year 12 and a rock music video in year 13 as well as to include a digi pack and website design for the band. within both productions I have had to research similar products that I would use as inspiration and as guides to the codes and conventions of the specific products. This research helped me gain ideas and add to the overall creativity within my products.

For both years the source of my inspiration and research was fueled by the website you tube due to it being a large source of videos which included both music videos and film openings form which I gained my ideas and was able to expand on them. after finding the film openings that gave me the most insight I used the website Wikipedia to gain additional information on the per-existing products in order to let me better understand them and adapt any new ideas I had for both music video and film opening.

when looking into my film opening the pre-existing products were a big help in letting me understand the specific codes and conventions of thriller videos for example within looking at Indiana Jones it gave our group the idea of an artifact however also looking at other thrillers such as silence of the lambs where new questions keep arising we were able to incorporate this into our opening by making it so that the artifact is only seen for a brief moment in order to make the mystery surrounding it seem more intriguing for the audience.
also from silence of the lambs we came about with the interrogation idea in order to make the audience more confused and ask more questions however we made the questions more indirect allowing them to come up with their own theory's as to what is going on within the film to add suspense and keep the audience entertained.

For the music video I used inspiration once again from videos found on you tube such as other sum41 songs and more modern rock bands such as 30 seconds to mars and fallout boy. however at the same time still taking the main idea from slightly older songs by bon jovi with the main music video inspiration being 'its my life' with the boy running to the concert.
I feel that working on the music video was helpful to me as I had to research new codes and conventions for the rock video in comparison to my thriller opening which allowed me to develop my skills using digital technology even more.

I feel that overall the music video allowed me to greatly expand on my skills using digital technology due to me having to also include a website for the band and a CD cover for the Digi pack. Being made to make a website I was able to improve my digital skills through out the use of the website 'wix' which allowed me to make a fully functional website for the band of the song (in this case sum41) and I was capable of making a successful website by going back and looking at the official sum41 website as well as other websites from the same genre such as Greenday and blink 182.

For the use of the Digi pack it allowed me to improve my skills using adobe Photoshop as I saved a blank CD cover case design, including back design and inside cover and by using adobe Photoshop I was able to improve my skills by designing my own CD cover and case.

Overall I feel that over the two years working on my media products I can say that my skills have improved in all areas from website usage, to planning and preparation due to it seeming to be easier and flow much smoother this year then last and also in my program skills such as adobe Photoshop and movie editing software such as Sony Vegas and final cut pro.

Analysis of past product - narrative theory's

For my A2 production my group made the music video for the song 'no reason' by Sum 41.
The song comes from the genre of punk rock and as such uses instruments such as drums, electric guitars and base guitars.
The theme of the song is about there being no reason for suffering and class divide and this is showing within such lyrics as "How can we fake this anymore,To turn our backs away, and chose to just ignore" or "Times like these I've come to see how,Everything but time is running out"

Due to this we felt that the video had to give some representation of the songs message and so it starts off with a hobo on the park bench and a man in a suit walking over and spitting near the hobo just to show his disrespect. this here relating to the magic bullet theory by 'berger' in how even before the song starts the audience is motivated by the video to think about the distinct divide between class.

once the man in the suit walks away the music starts and the hobo starts running from his sleeping spot. this here trying to represent his determination to change and also to link in with the songs message of that 'there is non reason why people cant change'.

as the hobo runs his 'transformation' starts in how he throws his hat on the ground and with each stage he then takes off his bushy hair (in this case a wig) and his large coat. this here links in with the U&G theory by McQuail, Lull and Kilborn and how the audience watching the hobos change and progression will feel a sense of gratification due to the change form the initial sadness of the hobos life at the start of the music video.

While taking off the hobos clothes (at this point just the hat has been taken off) the hobo starts running up stairs, this here shows his progression through life and how he changes his outlook and so progresses. As he reaches the top he stands triumphant and takes off the wig to give himself a more youthful look with him now only wearing the big coat.
with the scene then progressing to him continuing running he takes off the coat and appears to be in a suit, here showing his rise form hobo to rock-star.

relating this change to maslows hierarchy of needs it shows how he originally was at the physiological stage in how all he needed was food and shelter and yet now he is seeming to be at the esteem stage through the representation of him in a suit and confidence.

the hobo/rock-star then enters a room in which the music cuts out and the other band members appear questioning him on where he has been with the reply being cut short by the man in the suit appearing letting them know they only have 5 minutes left of band practice here revealing himself to actually be there band manager. this we thought would be entertaining for the audience and at the same time showed how the different levels of respect occur between the classes.

with the band finishing off the song so far up to this the video can be related to jauss's reception theory and how the viewers would be categorized within the 'negotiated' due to how they would find it hard to believe the change form hobo to rock-star is a realistic one.

with different shots of the band finishing off the song together the final part of the video could be related to stuart halls dominant hegomonic position and how hopefully the viewer would be in 'harmony' with ones self due to realizing and understanding the key message within the product in how there is no reason people cant change.

in conclusion hopefully most of the narrative theory's would help explain the main point and message from the song in which is no reason and how there is no reason people cant change and this is represented clearly with the rise from hobo (nothing) to the rock-star (something).

Analysis of past product - representation

For our AS production we created a opening sequence of a thriller film. the synopsis of the opening being that a man is being kidnapped and interrogated by a un-clear person with the only recollection of his past being him attempting to grab out and touch a artifact of some sort.
the opeinign starts off with the protagonist on the ground, this starting off a stereotypical thriller with how it instantly makes the viewers confused and make them ask questions about the situation.

with the scene fading and the credits starting you hear the booming voice of *wake up! tell me, now!" this adding once again to the enigma of the scene and relating this to levi-strausses theory of opposition being visual with the sunlight in the first scene against the darkness of the credit background in the next.
The voice in the credit scene once again suiting typical thriller films by there use of enigma by us still not being able to see who is saying it and due to its deem and sinister sounding nature it adds to the fear factor for the audience.
cutting to an un-clear eyesight you can tell that the man is still dazed and confused with only sunlight being seen thought the gaps in his eyes, afterwards in which they close again to cut to more credits, here another less sinister voice saying 'im sorry I don't know what you want' and then for the booming voice to reply ;just try and remember'. Here showing how the two are connected in some way with the deeper voice clearly being represented as the person with more power.

As the protagonist wakes up he is shown to be tied up in a room with only a table with strange images on it and the antagonists feet being the only view possible, this representing him as a man with less power and due to needing to conceal his face we decided to let the antagonists feet be shown this way we can show him as a superior person without using a low angle camera shot.

With the antagonist slamming his fists down on the table it clearly shows him represented as the dominant character and being given the typical male gaze as a dominant overpowering person.
this relating with 'propps's' theory of narrative finctions and relating to '7) the victim is fooled by the villian, unwittingly helps the enemy'.

with the scenen fading with the antagonist stating' tell me everything you know' it then fades to the credits and the stating 'the last thing i can remember; before cutting to the protagonists hand reaching out for an artifact of some sort before cutting again. this showing the typical object that the extract revolves around.

with more credits and then the first proper view of the protagonist you can see him as a tied up beaten mean in a chair, the blood signifying pain and this representing the violent way in which thrillers are usally shown.
with the protagonist being slapped by the antagonist and then cutting to the title screen it hints that there will be more violence to watch making the viewers captivated.

Within our extract it is fairly difficult to show different ways of representation, this being for one that we did not have the time scale in the sense of movie time to add more scenes into the clip and secondly due to the fact that this is a extremely low budget film we did not have the needs to show more representation, it could be suggested however that if say we were a large Hollywood conglomerate then the chances of being able to represent more within the clip could be heightened.

Do kidulthood and fish tank create a realistic representation of youth?

The theorist, Stuart Hall, once proposed the idea that the media itself "produces representations of the social world via images and portrayals". This leading to the point that ideological things within the world have become neutralized and due to this it can be seen that with the way youths have been portrayed in the media it can be seen that 80% of the time this is shown in a negative light.
This can be seen by looking at the two well known films of  'kidulthood' and 'fishtank' and how both films try to represent the different struggles that youths face themselves in today's society. They can also however both be compared to the 1950's film of  'rebel without a cause' and how in 1955 it was proposed that the representation of youth was accurate from the film, with the only rebel like actions in the film being that James dean is seen seeking out of his house at night, having illegal car races and drinking and smoking. However now comparing it to the films  'kidulthood' and 'fishtank, and with how they represent youths as going off to wherever they feel, taking drugs, getting involved in crime, getting pregnant at an early age and having knife and gun fights. well then you can see that if they are both true representations of modern youth then the media has every right to portray youth in the way that they do when looking at how there negativity has escalated since 1955.

Another theory would be from David Buckingham and how he stated "A focus on identity requires us to pay closer attention to the ways in which media and technologies are used in everyday life and their consequences for social groups". This here showing how now in today's society of youth there are more problems that can be seen to relate back to the use of modern technology, such as within the film 'kidulthood' and how through out the film the use of mobiles to gather people for the part near the end of the film (consequently where trouble happens) and this also highlighting David Buckingham's theory that modern technology is used to cause more problems in today's society.
this view can also be backed up by the actions of youth during the London riots and how with the use of mobile phones and similar technology such as blackberry messenger and twitter (web 2.0) it made the chaos of the riots more difficult to control as opposed to the Brixton riots and how with less technology to spread the news it was handled easier.

Another theory that can relate to the films and how they are a good representation of youth would be by Henri Tajfel and how his theory that "we strive to improve ourselves through improving our self esteem and this is done by believing that your social group is considered to be the in-group and not the out-group".
this theory relating to the film 'fish tank' and how the main character tries to improve herself by submitting a dance video later on in the film due to her feeling that she is not in the in-group after confronting her old friends who were dancing and seemingly fitting into the in-group instead of the main character.

From looking at the two films and seeing how the media gives off the representation of youth it can be seen that from the medias point of view the films 'fish tank' and 'kidulthood' are indeed creating a realistic representation of youth.
however bearing in mind that due to the widespread popularity of these films it can be seen that although the films are only representing a small portion of youth it will be believed through the viewers that this is how all youths are portrayed and this is not the case even thought with the use of the media which seem to heighten the view that all youth should be represented in this way. This being done mainly by the tabloid media and how with newspapers such as 'daily mail' and 'the sun' referring to youths as slobs, hoodlums, scum and dysfunctional, the view of the common youth is focused even more.
Due to this it should be seen that in conclusion, yes the films give a realistic representation of the medias portrayal of youth, however due to them only representing a small portion of actual youth it is not realistic in representing 'youth' as a whole but is more successful at representing the 'media youth' and the 'correct' portrayal that the media has created.
